SPDC’s Community Health Services
Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria’s (SPDC’s) approach to
helping communities in the Niger Delta overcome poverty and meet their
basic needs is through Community Development: to empower the
communities by helping to build their capacity and confidence to take
the lead role in decisions for their own development. In the area of
health care, Shell Nigeria works alongside partners towards a more
coordinated strategy to diminish the spread of HIV & AIDS.
The company has worked with various civil society and government
partners to raise awareness and provide greater avenues for prevention,
care and treatment for HIV & AIDS in the Niger Delta.
For
example, SPDC worked with Family Health International (FHI), the
National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA), Ministries of Health, and
State Action Committees on AIDS on the Niger Delta AIDS Response Project (NiDAR)
to establish high-quality HIV & AIDS comprehensive care, treatment
and support services in 5 SPDC-supported cottage hospitals in the Niger
Delta, the first such facilities of their kind in Nigeria. In the Afam Out of School Youth Programme (OSY), SPDC
and its implementing partner, Society for Family Health (SFH),
developed peer education programs for both out-of-school and in-school
youth in the Afam
community of Rivers and Abia States, to improve their sexual
and reproductive health in order to reduce the transmission of HIV
& AIDS in the community.
To support and
commemorate World AIDS Day in 2006, SPDC held the “Shell AIDS Schools’
Challenge”, an HIV & AIDS quiz competition among secondary schools
in the Niger Delta.

Communicating for Change (CFC)
Communicating
for Change (CFC) is a dynamic, state-of-the-art communications
organisation raising Africans’ awareness of environmental and
development issues to create positive change to develop the continent
and ultimately improve lifestyles. Messages are produced from a
distinctly African perspective to counter the ever increasing flow of
foreign, often culturally inappropriate programming. Besides awareness
raising, CFC plays an important role in promoting partnerships between
the public, private, academic, and civil society sectors by providing
excellent, appropriate, and cutting-edge communications support,
products, and training. CFC focuses on radio, TV, print, media
research, theatre, capacity building, special events, campaigns, and
electronic communications via the Internet to relay messages. CFC led
the Bayelsan Silhouettes project in collaboration with Shell
Nigeria by using film and capacity building as powerful tools to
effectively raise youth awareness in the region and in Nigeria as a
whole regarding HIV & AIDS.
